Hemoglobin

One of the main causes of anemia in prematurity is the amount of blood removed for diagnostic tests. Using capillary blood with the HemoCue Hemoglobin system can minimize trauma to pediatric patients. The HemoCue Hemoglobin system utilizes only 10 µL capillary, venous, or arterial blood. The system is portable and sampling can easily take place in an incubator. When intralipids are added to parenteral nutrition preparation, lipemia can occur and interfere with some diagnostic testing. HemoCue Hemoglobin system measures on two different wavelengths in order to compensate for turbidity e.g. due to lipids.

Glucose
Neonatal hypoglycemia is common and often asymptomatic. Left untreated, it may – in combination with other factors – lead to compromised neurological development, or in extreme cases, death. For these reasons, a rapid, precise, and accurate glucose method like HemoCue, which is not affected by extremes of hematocrit, pO2, bilirubin, or other potential interfering substances, is essential in the neonatal intensive care unit.
